Indie games are fast becoming a vessel for perspective shifting art. The participatory aspect of gaming makes them a better fit than movies – it’s nice to see emotions, but actually putting us in the position, and making us feel them? That’s some powerful juju.
We’ve seen it at its most powerful recently with acclaimed games like Telltale’s The Walking Dead, Spec-Ops: The Line
That powerful juju is what director Leonard Menchiari – currently experiencing the growing discontent in Italy – is hoping to tap into with RIOT, an upcoming riot simulator for iOS, Android, PC, and Mac.
Every day the news seems to have some new riot or demonstration breaking out somewhere, as the cracks opened during the world’s economic crisis widen. This game aims to throw the player straight into those scenarios; as protester, and as cop; through moral choices and beautiful pixel art
What is it that triggers such a strife? What does a cop feel during the conflict? In “Riot”, the player will experience both sides of a fight in which there is no such thing as “victory” or “defeat“.
That’s the basis of the game, straight from the source. We’re gonna keep a close eye on the development of this one.
